Biography:

Patricia Miller is an Assistant Professor at Mount Royal University, within the faculty of Child & Youth Studies and Social Work. She continues to consult and research within the larger HIV community, within the province of Alberta. She is dually registered as a Social Worker and Psychologist, while running a private practice within the city of Calgary, Alberta.

Abstract:

To provide participants with an understanding of the prevalence of interpersonal violence for women living with HIV and why there is an urgency to respond to this interplay of medical and social issue that require practitioners to respond with a trauma informed approach. This presentation will inform practitioners of the multiple pathways that can be developed to approach interpersonal violence for this susceptible group of patients living with HIV, across the lifespan. Trauma informed practice approaches across the lifespan will be explored with discussion of best practice approaches within direct and indirect medical care locations, social services centers and other community services. A full review of an interpersonal violence screening tool that was used and implemented in Calgary, Alberta will be explored as well as the successful integration of best practice strategies that prevent further harm, while increasing the general well-being of women living with HIV, while reducing the impact of trauma.
